
Stop the Shorts: Why Your IR Heater Leads Keep Failing
If you’re running IP65-rated infrared heaters, you already know the struggle. You’re fighting a constant war against moisture and brutal heat cycles. But here’s the thing: the heating element itself is rarely the problem. The real nightmare happens right where the lead-wire hits the housing. That little junction is where everything usually falls apart, especially if you’re working in a humid or caustic environment.
Why those seals actually fail
Most setups just use basic glues or a simple silicone gasket. Honestly? That’s a recipe for disaster. When these heaters heat up and cool down over and over, the materials expand and shrink. Eventually, those cheap seals just crack. Once that happens, moisture wicks right into the terminal. Your copper leads start to oxidize, resistance climbs, things get way too hot in the wrong places, and—pop—you’ve got a dead short. We handle this differently. We use OEM-grade potting and sealing compounds that actually move with the quartz or metal housing. It stops that “breathing” effect where the heater basically sucks in damp air every time it cools down.
The difference between “cheap” and “right”

The honest trade-off
I’ll be straight with you: this kind of high-grade sealing makes field repairs nearly impossible. You can’t just “unplug” a potted lead-wire. If you try to dig it out, you’ll destroy the seal. You have to replace the whole heating assembly. It’s a choice. You give up the ability to do a quick, messy patch job in exchange for stopping the random short-circuits that kill your production line. My advice?
