
Why your bathroom needs more than just a heater
Most people see those infrared heat lamps in the bathroom and think they’re just there to keep you from shivering when you step out of the shower. But there’s a much bigger reason we use them, especially in rooms with high ceilings. It’s actually about fighting mold. Here is how it works. Most heaters just warm up the air. That’s fine for your skin, but it doesn’t do much for your walls. We use shortwave infrared (SWIR) because it doesn’t bother with the air—it goes straight for the surfaces. It hits your tiles, your grout, and your ceiling. Think of it like this: when your walls stay warm, water can’t settle on them. No condensation means no damp spots. And no damp spots means mold spores have nowhere to land and grow. Mold is picky. It needs organic stuff to eat, moisture, and a cold surface to call home. By hitting those “cold spots”—you know, those annoying corners and high ceiling joints—the IR lamp basically kicks the moisture out of your paint and grout. It’s almost like a second dehumidifier. It pushes the hidden moisture out of the walls and into the air, which makes it way easier for your exhaust fan to actually grab it and throw it outside. But you can’t just throw any lamp into any room. Since these things put out a lot of concentrated heat, you have to make sure your fixture can actually handle the wattage. If you put a massive lamp in a tiny bathroom, you’ll end up baking the air into a sauna before the walls even have a chance to dry. It gets uncomfortable fast. The trick is to balance the heat with how well your fan moves air. My advice? Hook the lamp up to a timer or a humidity sensor. That way, it runs just long enough to get the room bone-dry after your shower, then shuts off so you aren’t wasting electricity. Simple.
